Ranking Digital Rights

The New Technologies, Transparency, and Human Rights Project, funded by Penn’s Global Engagement Fund, is a cross-disciplinary project, working with faculty and students across Penn to examine the relationship between government and corporate power in today’s digitally networked world. Specifically, the project brings together research partners from across the university and around the world to develop a methodology to evaluate and compare the policies and practices of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies as they affect internet users’ freedom expression and privacy in a human rights context, serving as the academic anchor for the launch of a broader cross-institution global research project called Ranking Digital Rights.  The project is led by Annenberg Affiliate Rebecca MacKinnon, a Senior Research Fellow at the New America Foundation.
