From the Iran Media Project:
The 9th Biennial Conference of Iranian Studies, organized by International Society for Iranian Studies (ISIS), was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from August 2nd to 5th, 2012. More than 250 scholars and academics from all over the world were present at this conference that covered a wide range of issues in Iranian Studies. While the conference used to be held mainly in North American cities, selecting Turkey as this year’s venue was supposed to facilitate participation of Iran-based scholars. However, during the last few weeks before the conference, a majority of conference attendees from Iran refused to participate. This report looks at the background stories of this event and uses this case to focus on the role of pro-government media in creating an atmosphere of intimidation for Iranian scholars and academics.
